LOCAL
COMMUNITIES TO WELCOME THE FRIENDSHIP CARAVAN: Citizens Invited
To Join Historic Town Hall Meeting and Attend Cultural Programs Celebrating
Arab and American Friendship
Gaithersburg,
Maryland and nearby communities welcomed The Friendship Caravan
from Tuesday Oct.
21 through Saturday Oct. 25.
The key players were Rotary Clubs and other organizations, school
districts, city officials, corporate sponsors, interfaith groups,
local media, and the nations participating. Gaithersburg hosted many
programs of the pilot Caravan, including the Friendship Tent at the
YMCA Wellness
Center Upper Montgomery County. Other institutions in Montgomery
County also endorsed the project.
Among
Arab nations the Kingdom of Bahrain is taking the lead by sending
a delegation of musicians and henna artists. Morocco, UAE, Egypt and
the Sudan also sent participants.
The
key words about the Caravan are “positive” and “optimistic”. At a
time when misconceptions and fear are blurring understanding, the
Caravan provided an opportunity to create non-confrontational dialogue
and experience those things that can bring us together.
The
people on the Friendship Caravan will be Americans who have lived
for long periods of time in the Arab world, Americans of Arab ancestry
together with Arabs from outside America.
National
and local news coverage included the Associated Press, Washington
Post, CNN, C-SPAN, National Public Radio (NPR), Fox-TV, NBC-TV and
ABC-TV local affiliates, The Gazette, and the National Peace Corps
Association WorldView. Global news coverage included Agence-France
Presse (AFP), Gulf Daily News (Bahrain), and Arabic News.
